Cloisonné is an ancient art form that was introduced to China by western travelers in the 14th century. The word cloisonné means to compartmentalize or create different cells, and it applies to both the process and the medium.
First, artisans bend wire strips by hand to form the patterns that make up the design. The wires are then soldered onto the copper form which has been molded to create the desired shape of the ornament. Each cell is inlaid with enamels to achieve the desired colors, then fired at very high temperatures. The ornaments are then cooled, polished, and 24k gold plated.
The ornaments are made by highly trained artisans in villages throughout China that specialize in the art of cloisonné.
